FAQ

Straight answers to the questions we hear most from maintenance teams.

How often do overhead cranes need to be inspected?

Inspection frequency can be complex and depends on the crane’s service classification and how it is used. OSHA and CMAA define two required types of inspections: Frequent and Periodic. Each inspection serves a different purpose and follows specific scheduling requirements based on usage, environment, and duty cycle. The tables below provide a general overview based on CMAA 78 guidelines. If you are unsure which schedule applies to your equipment, call us and we will help you determine a compliant inspection plan.

Frequent Inspection Intervals (CMAA 78)

Service Classification Typical Usage Inspection Interval
Normal Service - Class A, B, and C Routine industrial operation with moderate usage Semi-Monthly to Semi-Anually
Heavy Service - Class D High cycle operation or heavier loads Weekly to Monthly
Severe Service - Class E and F Continuous duty, harsh environments, or critical lifts Daily to Weekly

Periodic Inspection Intervals (CMAA 78)

Service Classification Inspection Interval
Normal Service - Class A, B, and C Annually
Heavy Service - Class D Annually to Semi-Annually
Severe Service - Class E and F Quarterly

Inspection intervals may vary based on crane condition, environment, and regulatory requirements. We can review your equipment, usage patterns, and documentation to help establish the correct inspection schedule.

How often do overhead cranes need to be load tested?

CMAA guidelines recommend load testing overhead cranes at a minimum interval of once every four years. In addition, OSHA requires load testing whenever a crane is newly installed, has undergone extensive repair, or has been structurally altered before it is returned to service.

Load testing verifies the structural integrity of the crane, confirms proper operation under rated capacity, and helps document compliance with regulatory and manufacturer requirements. If you are unsure whether your crane requires load testing or when it was last performed, we can review your equipment history and help determine the appropriate testing schedule.

What’s included in your inspection package?

Our standard package includes an on-site inspection and a digital report suitable for recordkeeping and compliance documentation. If we find issues that require repair or load testing, we’ll review the findings with maintenance and provide a clear quote before proceeding.

Do you service multiple cranes during one visit?

Yes. Many customers schedule several cranes at once to reduce downtime and paperwork. Our multi-crane packages are designed for this, and we’ll coordinate access so your operations stay moving.

What can affect inspection pricing?

Pricing can change when equipment is non-standard or requires additional time to access safely—examples include outdoor cranes, process cranes, gantries with long travel, special lifting devices (magnets, grabs), or restricted runways. If anything falls outside the standard package, we’ll confirm scope and pricing before work begins.

Can you respond to an emergency breakdown?

Yes. If a crane is down or unsafe to operate, call us and we’ll gather key details such as the symptoms, location, and site access requirements. We are normally able to offer same-day service calls for emergency situations to help restore operation as quickly and safely as possible.
